Carl Adams has worked on Dr. Katz, Home Movies, and Assy McGee. We forced him to talk about the new show his studio is animating in this clumsily worded, contractually obligated email questionnaire.
What is Southies?
Southies is an animated family comedy set in the unique and colorful world of South Boston. It tells the story of Seamus O'Reilly, his family and their relatives and neighbors, and how they all like to smash things over each others' heads. And drink coldies.
Have the voices been cast? Will you be bringing in any of the great actors you've worked with in the past?
We are casting now. We are playing around with the idea of casting all Boston non-actors. We spent a lot of times at bars and diners and asking friends of friends who were born and raised here.
Why a show about Boston?
Well I live in Boston and Southie is a pretty unique neighborhood. Southie is geographically isolated from the rest of Boston so they tend to have their own unwritten rules that everyone is aware of. Southie has gotten pretty gentrified over the years, but it's also nicely stayed the same and held onto its character. Also worth noting that it's only a mile or so from Downtown Boston, which makes any neighborhood rivalries kind of funny.
How would you instruct someone to imitate a Southie accent?
Watch Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting or Laura Linney in Mystic River and don't do that.
Are there Northies? What are the other Boston subcultures?
Well the geography of Boston is famously confusing. Southie is South Boston and it lies directly east of the South End, which is a neighborhood referred to as appropriately, the South End. But the South End is totally different than Southie. North of the South End is East Boston and southwest of East Boston is the North End. That said, Boston is super small and directly next to the people's republic of Cambridge, MIT and Harvard.
Isn't Boston known for being a tough city to navigate by car?
Best 2 bits of advice are don't make eye contact with other drivers so they aren't aware you are aware. Also that directionals are just giving valuable information to the enemy.
Is there any concern South Boston will be angry at your depiction of them? Or is it somewhat affectionate?
That would be pretty weird if anybody were angry about this. I mean, I live in and love Boston and also love hanging out with friends in Southie. Besides everyone was fighting over the rights to being the Springfield' home of the Simpsons, right? Not the best depiction. But maybe someone will be angry, that would be funny in itself. It would be depressing if my last words were "uh dude it's just a cah-toon".
If you could make a Southie product (a beer, a barbecue sauce, whatever), what would it be?
Hummels.
